Remarks | Vegter (Index Herb. Coll. M: 527. 1976) listed "H.W. Menke" as a plant collector in Brazil and "BR (Ph.); Europe: KSC, PH" as housing his collections. However, the preceding "H.W. Menke" is an error for Karl Theodor Men(c)ke (1791-1861), but this person did not collect in Brazil. The collection was made by Maximilian Alexander Philipp, Prinz zu Wied Neuwied during 1815—1817 in Brazil. After his Brazilian trip, Wied collaborated with several people in Germany, e.g., K.T. Menke. Although Wied did not number most of his gatherings, Menke and other botanists gave their distribution numbers (e.g., Eugenia sprengelii DC.: "Menke 104" at BR). In contrast, H.W. Menke (fl. 1890s-1900s) collected birds and fossils. |
