= Opuntia polyacantha Haw. var. polyacantha, det. B. D. Parfitt, 1991 mounted with non-type specimen of S. Watson 434 (= O. macrorhiza) [comment on SEINet Portal: "This specimen has at least three counterparts, one here, one at the Smithsonian with the same number, and one on Tropicos without any number which is apparently at MOBOT. That specimen, MOBOT #2015631, includes a note in Watson's handwriting: "On the divide over the Wahsatch Mountains, where the Pacific RR crosses them, 7000 ' high, Sereno Watson 1869." The Union Pacific railroad at that time only existed (and only as of about Jan. of 1869), between Evanston down to Echo i.e. through Echo Canyon and from Echo down Weber Canyon, i.e. there was no railroad yet between Echo and Park City, nor between Park City and Parley's Canyon. Given that, the most likely location of this specimen was 5 miles SW of the UT-WY border (8 miles SW of Evanston) at 41.199319 -111.113540 in Summit (not Wasatch) County." Tony Frates, 14 Jan 2020.]
