Remarks

Annotation by W. A. Weber, 1991: "Eriophorum garcile Koch var. caurianum Fernald, Rhodora 7: 87. 1905, was characterized by its pale scales, as opposed to the dark or almost black ones of most Arctic and eastern American plants. These types do characterize the western United States collections from Colorado to California, but they occur also in the main range. Fernald missed the fact that the scales are also more faintly multi-nerved. He did not account for the earlier E. gracile var. paucinervium Engelm., Amer. J. Sci. 46: 103. 1844, which shares the same features. I consider the variety trivial."
