McNeal (1994): "In our opinion Ownbey was incorrect in designating this specimen as type (i. e. holotype) and attributing the name A. tolmei to J. G. Baker ex S. Watson; the correct attribution is A. tolmei J. G. Baker var. tolmei and the specimen at Kew is the holotype." M. Ownbey (1967) notes from S. D. McKelvey, Bot. Exploration of Trans-Mississippi West, 627-635. 1955, that this specimen was collected by John McCleod.
