Habitat | A calcareous fen (about 0.3 acre in size), with what appears to be a larger non-calcareous fen north of it, occurs in a drainageway. There are scattered pools with white sediment and Chara sp. in the sedge mat zone of the calcareous fen. The soil in both fens is mapped in the county soil survey (1977) as Parnell silty clay loam, 0 to 1 percent slopes (Pa), a Typic Argiaquoll. The soil in the fens is actually muck. A dugout (stock pond) occurs on the south end of the calcareous fen and was dug into the calcareous fen. The fens are on the Prairie Coteau. |
